Few pieces of music stir the soul like Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus.” On October 30, 2010 the Opera Company of Philadelphia and over 650 area musicians met at Macy’s Center City Department Store in Philadelphia for a “Random Act of Culture.” Without any prior announcement, they performed the “Hallelujah Chorus” accompanied by the Wanamaker Organ–the world’s largest pipe organ. You can see the shoppers register surprise and then delight as the music fills the store. This is what we ought to do with our great worship music. We ought to take it out of the sanctuary and put in the midst of the busy crowds so everyone can hear it.
